2006 Gewurztraminer

The grapes came from the Neufeld Vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake (Palatine Hills) and were harvested on Sept. 27, 2006. I bought 60L of settled-juice in total.

The juice was inoculated with 1/3rd BA11 yeast and 2/3rds R2 in order to lift the aromatics as much as possible. Fermentation took roughly three weeks and ended at dryness.

Unfortunately, by the fifth day or so of fermentation, this wine took on off-odours that persisted right on through to the bottle. I've since realized this smell is typical of the "perfumed" nose of Gewurz from this region, but I don't find it particularly pleasant and therefore consider this wine to be a failure.
